If you are going to prune or plant a hedge here are some tips to help you out.

Make sure that the bottom ends up wider than the top

The faces of a hedge should slope gently so sunlight reaches all of the leaves. Otherwise, the bottom branches will die out, and the top will become too heavy.

In most cases, prune a hedge to have a level top, and step it in sections if it is on a slope
